Configuration Management
Circa Information believes in Configuration Management:
- At the highest level, Configuration Management is responsible for keeping a controlled list of all services provided and which items, network, hardware, software etc, are required to deliver those services.
- Configuration Management is not just an inventory of hardware and software - it also describes how they are connected.
- Implementing Configuration Management requires a major committment from both line staff and management but it yeilds high rewards in freeing staff time to better respond to operational priorities.
- Configuration Management in the core of all ITIL processes. Although it should follow Change Management, it provides essential information to all of the IT processes, including Change Management.
- It is possible to estimate the amount of money to be saved in down time avoided and staff time not spent on the "keeping of lists" that is typically the way the Configuration Management is conducted where a formal process is not available. These calculations provide a solid Business Case for the implementation of Configuration Management.
